Recumbents for Rehabilitation

Don’t let physical limitations stop you from enjoying the outdoors on a bike!

Are you wishing you could be riding a bike again? A recumbent bike or trike just may be what the doctor ordered!

We stock many bike and trike designs that are far more adaptable and accessible than the typical upright two-wheeled bicycle concept. Maybe a new recumbent bike or trike would bring back your freedom to ride.

Over the years we have adapted/fitted recumbent trikes for riders who use a walker or forearm crutches. Riders who have lost the use of one arm or who need help transferring from a wheelchair into their trike. In case of a diminished leg capacity we offer trikes with combined arm and leg propulsion. Exercise is important if you are in peak health and even more important if your health peaked quite a while ago.

Some of our customers are recovering from multiple hip and knee replacements, spinal fusions, traumatic brain injury, amputation, car or motorcycle accidents heart attacks or stroke.

Recumbent Trikes may help you set aside the walker or wheelchair if only for a little while.

We have customers who successfully ride in spite of nerve disorders, balance ailments, MS, spinal cord injuries, ALS and Parkinson’s. Some were serious bike racers, fitness buffs and commuters. Others are reformed couch potatoes, dieters and even folks just out of cardiac & post-operative rehab. A recumbent bike – trike is working for them; it may well work for you. We have fitted recumbents for riders from age 9 to 90. Recumbents are a very versatile, adaptable & adaptive means of comfortable exercise, rehabilitation and transportation.

Adaptive pedals and cane holders are all part of the puzzle to get clients back on the road. Working with these clients has given me the greatest pleasure. The smile on a child on their first ride on a vehicle under their own propulsion, is priceless. You may call them differently able, handicapped or physically challenged, I call them overcomers. When life gave them every excuse to sit down and feel sorry for themselves, they refuse to be counted out of the game. They don’t expect riding to be as easy for them as it is for their friends and neighbours, but what is anymore? Now let us help you or some one you love.

BerkelBike

The BerkelBike is the ideal solution for physically challenged individuals who have no use, or limited use, of their legs. It is a combination of a handcycle and a recumbent bike and is driven by using both the power of the arms as well as legs. When the arms create propulsion the legs automatically move simultaneously. Therefor with assistance from the arms, even legs with diminished leg capacity can cycle. Even during cycling it is possible to continue only with the arms or the legs and give tired body parts a rest.
The bike creates a full body workout for both fully functional body parts as well as impaired ones. It is also possible to get heavily impaired or even paralysed legs moving again.
The BerkelBike Pro can be used in case of diminished coordination or strength in the legs or arms and legs. Some disabilities that greatly benefit from the BerkelBike are Multiple Sclerosis, spinal cord injury, amputations or general brain damage.

Self-powered mobility puts a smile on your face. Especially when it feels like rolling from A to B in your favorite lounge chair.
Although most of us have several options for getting around and staying active, we usually only choose the ones that we enjoy. That’s why we developed the LEPUS.

HA Trets

Joy supplies a heck of a lot of power. And the TRETS adds the versatility. Our mini-trike is an absolute fun machine for younger riders. For you, it’s a jack of all trades: a pedal-powered child trailer, a cargo trailer, or – with optional features –
even a jogger. Playgrounds always have a fence or a wall. The TRETS has no such borders: and children of all ages are welcome. With the infant carrier, even the tiniest passengers can sit safely in the TRETS Jogger, Buggy, or Trailer. Later, from a height of about 3’3” (100 cm), they can pedal along – or even zoom around the block on their own three wheels. And the fun goes on until about 4’11” (1.50 m).

GS Magnum

Many people have said that it is not possible to build a trike which is suitable for the road as well as off-road. Others have said, you must have suspension to give a smooth ride. However, this increases the weight, adds complication, and cost. Well, the Greenspeed Magnum breaks the mould in trike design! No longer is it necessary to agonize over the choice of a high seat trike for off road, or a low seat trike for on road, suspension or non-suspension, disc brakes or drum brakes, or a heavy, low-performance trike to take your weight. The Magnum is the first recumbent trike to have a seat which is adjustable for height. Plus it is adjustable for angle as well.

GS Anura

The Greenspeed Anura is designed to be easy to ride. Rather than having a low seat like most tadpole trikes (2 wheels front, and 1 rear), and some deltas (1 wheel front, and two rear) the Anura seat is set at the same height as a kitchen chair, at 17 to 18” above the ground, plus there is no cross member or front axle in front of the seat, so mounting and dismounting is much easier. The higher seat also gives more confidence in traffic, yet having the seat closer to the paired wheels than the single wheel gives more stability than expected.

GS Magnum Hand Cycle

Greenspeed has been building hand trikes to order since 1992, and these machines have been shipped to owners all over the world, including Europe and the USA. Greenspeed hand cycles are different from most other hand cycles in that they are based on the Greenspeed recumbent tricycles rather than a wheelchair with an extra wheel. Thus they are rear wheel drive, which gives superior traction than front wheel drive for hill climbing. Unlike lean to steer machines, the turning circle is even superior to the standard Greenspeed trikes, which have a very small turning circle, making them ideal for manoeuvering in tight places.
